Beware of Men with Moustaches
“I forget to say,” said Ivanka, turning round in her seat as the driver took both hands off the steering wheel to light a cigarette. “Your poetry group is very welcome to Karetsefia. Our versifiers keenly anticipate your readings.” “We’re honoured to have been invited,” replied Steve expansively, “and we hope to take something of your country back with us.” “Not icons,” said Ivanka. “You cannot take back icons.” “No, I didn’t mean that. I meant the spirit of the place.” “Yes, vodka you take.”
When Professor Stevens’ poetry group is invited to a tiny ex-soviet state, things don’t go as smoothly as new member Julie had hoped. There’s a fight on the plane as it comes in to land. The organisation that invited them over meets in a poky flat, and is more interested in property prices than performance poetry. The handsome stranger who steps in to translate for them is suspiciously generous with both his time and his money. And the girls who unexpectedly join them for the journey home seem remarkably reluctant to encounter any customs or immigration officials…
Author Elizabeth Kay has drawn on her experiences in Ukraine, Poland and the Czech Republic for this romp through a society clinging on to some of the values of the past whilst experimenting with private enterprise.
A Death in the Highlands
I had a sudden idea of what might be transpiring. I crept quietly not towards the kitchen, but to the near-by-larder. The door was ajar and as I looked in, holding the candle high above my head, I could clearly see our supplies had been disturbed. But was the intruder still present? It was at this precise moment I became aware of breathing behind me. I grabbed the nearest object that I could use as a weapon.
“Do you think it is quite wise of you to investigate alone?”
The voice was right at my ear. I shrieked and dropped the candle.
When Euphemia finds herself heading up the female staff at a hunting lodge in the Highlands of Scotland, she thinks her biggest challenge is going to be getting along with the local staff who have a mysterious grudge against the Staplefords. However, when guests start to arrive, Euphemia begins to suspect not everyone is quite who they seem. It’s not long before Euphemia finds herself at the heart of a murder mystery that will have international ramifications. Peril upon peril abounds and Euphemia only has her quick wits and loud scream to protect herself. Especially as Bertram Stapleford is being pig-headedly difficult. Fortunately, there’s a sharp-witted, young and rather handsome new butler to aid her enquiries, but when he is arrested for murder, Euphemia is determined to prove him innocent. In fact almost as determined as Bertram is to stop her interfering.
